It is not unknown that Mykonos is the most commercial island in Greece, attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world every year.
Known for its whitewashed houses with blue domes, this island has become a world famous hotspot for celebrities, honeymooners and partygoers.
There are around 200 islands in the Cyclades, Mykonos being one of the most popular – and for many reasons.
There is something for everyone in Mykonos but it is also possible to get away from the crowds and parties.
In the list that we have prepared for you below, only one place concerns partygoers.
The villages of Mykonos are small labyrinths of narrow streets and quaint alleys that were used to disorient pirates.
The island’s stunning coastline is ideal for watching the sunset while sipping a glass of wine, while the rocky landscape with its mountain streets is ideal for having fun with quads and motorbikes.
1. Visit the windmills of the Kato Milli complex
Just outside the Little Venice area of Mykonos are the famous White and Brown Windmills.
Mykonos was known from ancient times throughout Greece for its wheat production.
During its acne, there were over 20 windmills scattered around the island, each of which is vital to its production and the island’s economy.
Today there are only seven windmills left which have become one of the most visited sites on the island.
The best thing about windmills is that they are a great place to enjoy the sunset.

This small island is not only picturesque, but has had a vital role in Greek history and mythology.

1. What to do in Mykonos : Chora (Mykonos town)
The village of Chora, which has remained very well preserved, deserves to be at the top of the list of places to visit for travelers who want to feel the atmosphere of the island intensely.
The village, also known as Mykonos Town, is described as the heart of the island. It is served by the transport network and has interesting accommodation infrastructures because it is in the urban center.
When you enter the narrow streets of Chora, you will have the opportunity to see traditional houses which are one of the finest examples of Cycladic style architecture.
If you start the trip on Matoyanni Street in particular, you can easily access designer boutiques and gift shops. In fact, you can sit in small square blocks connected to the street and enjoy exquisite gastronomic experiences in restaurants that offer customers the most exclusive recipes of island cuisine.
2. What to do in Mykonos : Little Venice
The most romantic place on the island is Little Venice which covers the coast of Alevkantra beach. It was founded by sailors.
The vast majority of houses have now become popular bars or restaurants for a romantic dinner… Little Venice reveals its true magic when the sun begins to set. The twilight there is breathtakingly beautiful.
3. What to do in Mykonos : Windmills (Kato Well)
When it comes to sunset, the first thing that comes to mind in Mykonos is actually the area where the windmills are located. Windmills, which are classified between Alefkandra and Neochori, are architecturally quite common. They owe their value to the unique landscape that dominates their region rather than to their architectural features.
When you climb to the top, you can see the whole town of Chora and part of the port. Don’t forget to take the time to pass the island’s traditional ovens at the Yiora bakery and the Boni windmill, which has been converted into a museum.
4. What to do in Mykonos : The village of Ano Mera
Only 8 kilometers from Chora, the village of Ano Mera attracts those who want to spend a few peaceful hours in a tranquil atmosphere.
The village, which is the second largest village on the island, can be reached in about 15 minutes by public transport.
In the village, where you will have the opportunity to recognize the richness of the Cycladic culture from a different facet, traditional style stone houses and local businesses are gathered around a large square.
So when travelers arrive here, they can focus on exploring the cultural treasures spread over a wider area, rather than being stuck on the crowded beach strip, which is filled with shops, bars and restaurants.
The Panagia Tourliani monastery, founded in 1542, comes at the beginning of the places that can be visited in the village of Ano Mera. The monastery, where simplicity is at the forefront, gained its current appearance with restoration works carried out between 1757-1767, directed by Brother Ignatio Basoula.
After visiting Panagia Tourliani, you can continue your journey to the Byzantine castle, which decorates the top of the hill just in front of the village.
Although the road is a bit winding and uphill, I suggest you include the remains of the old castle on your route. Because the view is worth it.
5. What to do in Mykonos : Panagia Paraportiani Church
Mykonos is perhaps the most interesting of the religious buildings that you can put on your list of places to visit, the Panagia Paraportiani Church, dedicated to the Virgin Ada.
The name of this temple, which is kept open for 24 hours, means “to stand by the front door” in our language. The church took this name, because it was located right next to the castle gate.
The most interesting feature of the structure, which was founded in 1425, is that it contains 4 temples dedicated to Eustathios, Sozon, Anargyroi and Anastasia. Of the 4 temples on the ground floor, another was built later and the structure was recently restored.
The Panagia Paraportiani Temple, at the entrance to the Kastro district, is one of the most photographed structures on the island.
Byzantine and Cycladic building styles are visible throughout the construction phase which lasted over 300 years. In fact, during the renovation in 1920, the structure was treated with Western techniques, giving it a more current look.
6. What to do in Mykonos : Delos Island
You can take boats from the harbor or from behind Agios Nikolaos Church and visit Delos, which is like an open-air museum.
Of course, if your budget is generous enough, you can also take guided tours to learn more about the historical treasures that cover the island. The cost of boat transport to the island was 17 euros during my vacation. The Delos Archeology Museum is charged twice as much for guided tours, including visits to the Archeology Museum.
After a pleasant trip of about 30 minutes, the island, according to Greek mythology, was the birthplace of Leto, Artemis and Apollo.
In Delos Island, MO You can take a closer look at the historical remains left behind by the Romans, who sojourned on the island in 250.
7. What to do in Mykonos : Aegean Maritime Museum
The Aegean Maritime Museum was founded by George M. in 1985. Directed by Dracopoulos, it is a building built in a classical style in the 19th century.
In the home of the non-profit institute focused on information of Greek maritime history and traditions, which was once occupied by the legendary captain of the merchant ship Enosis, Nikolaos Sourmelis.
In the rooms of the structure converted into an exhibition space; you can examine various ship models, rare engravings and maps, historical shipping documents, archaeological finds, navigational tools.
An exhibition called “Three Living Histories” stands out as the pride of the Aegean Maritime Museum, which includes a rich library of more than 5 written sources, including manuscripts.
The Armenian Lighthouse and the Perama Evangelistria type sailboat and the multipurpose liner Thalis o Milissios are the only pieces in this exhibition, where it is really difficult to come across similar pieces.

8. What to do in Mykonos : Museum of Archeology
The Mikonos Archeology Museum, focusing on the period from prehistory to the late Hellenistic period, was established in 1902. The cultural facility, which is co-managed by the Greek Ministry of Education and the Archaeological Community of Athens, is exhibited mainly on the island of the Marionette, just off Delos.
The excavations, led by Stavropoulos in 1898, brought to light these ancient objects.
When you visit the Archaeological Museum of Mikonos, which is housed in a neo-classical building designed by Alexandros Lykadis, MO You can explore the 2nd century statue of Hercules.
In addition to this sculpture made of Parian marble, various objects placed in tombs during ancient times form a large collection in the museum. Aside from artifacts that shed light on the history of the Cyclades, you can find temporary exhibitions of contemporary art and design in the museum.
• Address: Agiou Stefanou, Mikonos 846 00

9. What to do in Mykonos : Folklore Museum
The Folk Museum of Mykonos next to the Panagia Paraportiani Church offers valuable information to travelers who want to learn about the culture of the island.
The museum was founded in 1958, thanks to donations from Professor Vasilis Kiriazopoulos, who served at the universities of Athens and Thessaloniki.
The number one exhibition hall of the Mikonos Folk Museum displays a variety of recent items, such as oil painting, locks, lamps and more. This area also includes weapons, tools and pieces produced in prehistoric times.
When you go to room two, you can find important information about trades that have a key place in the culture of the island. In other parts of the museum, you can take a closer look at everyday objects.
• Addresses: Kastro, Mikonos 846 00

• Website. mykonosfolkloremuseum.gr
10. What to do in Mykonos : Agricultural Museum
On the list of places to visit in Mykonos, I dedicated the last section of this chapter to Mylos tou Boni, part of the Folklore Museum. The cultural center, also known as the Agriculture Museum of Mykonos, is designed to accurately reflect information about a farmer’s life as requested by Professor Kiriazopoulos.
In this regard, the harman machine, the fire oven, the water well and the dovecote, which are essential parts of the houses called “horio” in the local language, were originally restored.
When you enter the Moulin de Boni, the main attraction of the Museum of Agriculture, at the top of the island’s world-famous windmills, you will have the privilege of seeing objects and furniture that were used in these premises.
Once you’ve walked through the inside of the mill and the surrounding structures and enjoyed the view, if you have time, I suggest stopping at the twin churches a short walk away.
• Visiting hours: 16.00-20.00
Other places to visit in Mykonos
If you spent more than 2-3 days of vacation in Mykonos, take the opportunity to visit the old port, the archaeological museum of Delos, the Paleokastro monastery, the lighthouse of Armenistis, the castle of Gyzi and the monastery of Panagia Tourliani …. Of course, don’t forget to see Peter the Pelican, a symbol of Mikonos as you tour the island, and stop at Matoyianni Street.
For art lovers, I remind you once again that the DIO Horia Gallery and the Rarity Gallery are must-sees when visiting the island.

But to get to this beach you either have your own car or you have to take one of the boats that leave Platis Gialos.
Note: Part of Super Paradise Beach has a nudist beach.
3. Elia Beach
Elia Beach, the last boat stop of Platis Gialos, is among the best places to enjoy the sea on the island with white sand beaches and turquoise sea.
There are also luxury accommodation facilities around. Just like Super Paradise, this place is very popular with gay people.
4. Ornos beach
With a structure protected from the wind, Ornos Beach is just the place for families, located in the southwest of the island.
Thanks to the small fishing pier, the beach is one of the ideal places for the island to anchor yachts, and the newly opened highway, facilitates accessibility.
5. Platis Gialos beach
Platis Gialos Beach, which travelers frequently include on their Mykonos travel bucket lists, is by far the busiest beach on the island. However, the location of sun loungers and umbrellas is well planned, so no matter how much you can enjoy the sea on the beach without any distractions. You can even take advantage of public transport at any time and go to other famous beaches on the island.
6. Psarou beach
If you like water sports, especially diving, I can say that Psarou Beach is definitely the ideal beach on the island for you.
Since 1980, it has been meeting the expectations of enthusiasts with a choice of beaches, restaurants and entertainment, which welcome thousands of holidaymakers, including world-famous names.
7. Paraga Beach
Paraga Beach, which is home to one of two campsites on the island, offers guests exceptional experiences in a commanding position over the exquisite views of Delos.
The beach is easily accessible by bus and has the necessary infrastructure to meet all your needs, including electricity.
8. Agrari Beach
If you don’t like crowds, you can put the most beautiful and possibly the best secluded beach on the island in the top order of your list, Agrari.
With its crystal clear sea and beach covered in golden sand, you can spend the whole day at the beach, enjoying the water sports facilities and then heading to the lovely taverna for a tasty meal.
9. Kalafatis beach
Now that you are talking about calm beaches, if you have a chance, I suggest you go to Kalafatis.
The beach is surrounded by trees, providing plenty of space for water sports enthusiasts, giving guests the opportunity to protect themselves from the sun in a natural way. Of course, there are sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach for those who want to be close to the cool Aegean waters.
10. Agios Ioannis beach
Watching the channel between Mikonos and Delos, Agios Ioannis Beach owes its reputation largely to the AI Giannis Festival, held at the end of September.
Surrounded by four luxury hotels and many summers, this small beach is easily accessible through Ornos and enjoy the blue sea in a relaxed atmosphere all day long.
Other popular beaches in Mykonos
The island has many more beaches to enjoy while enjoying the sea and focusing on different activities on the other hand.
If you want your list of places to visit Mykonos, Fokos, Nammos Mykonos, Paralia Kalo Livadi, Agios Stefanos, LIA, as they offer their guests the facilities I described above, expand to cover the beaches of Panormos, Agios Sostis, Tropicana, Flatia and Scorpios.
Where to stay in Mykonos?
One of the beautiful hotels where you can stay in the center of the island is the 4 star Ilio Maris.
But I would like to talk more about a hotel in Mykonos town suitable for accommodation in the center of the island. With over 1000 visitor reviews on Booking.com’da, Ilio Maris has a view of the sea and windmills with a high score of 9.1 out of 10.
Stay at this beautiful 4-star hotel in the center of the island, where you can enjoy the establishment’s swimming pool or take short walks to the tourist sites that are worth seeing.
